Words of Teddy Roosevelt About Being American

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

It’s good to be back to blogging here after a couple of weeks of being sick. With the increasing cases of MRSA and meningitis in America, it becomes scary to get ill and you start to wonder if all this “airborne” illness is the result of pollution or even germ warfare. We will discuss those topics in further detail in one of my next blogs.

Over the past couple of weeks, I have received some interesting comments, email and read some incredible news stories. Before I address them, I am wrapping up a topic that we have discussed over the past few months – illegal immigration. I was ready to wrap up with my last entry, but received an interesting comment from Mike that I felt should be addressed. I’ll quote his statement:

“I read your article while browsing for info on this subject. It’s well written and you seem well- informed. I did want to mention one thing though that you omitted and maybe aren’t aware of.

I have worked for years with illegal immigrants. Yet everyone has to fill out the I-9 and show ID, have a SS number etc. to work there. Many of these people are my friends, and I’ve got to know how it all works.

They simply buy a social security number and use it -usually- just for employment. It doesn’t cost that much, about $200. Often, less. So, they pay taxes. I know a lot of seasonal workers don’t, or the jack-of-all-trades people one can hire off the work corners get paid under the table. But literally millions of workers have a fake social security number and pay taxes.

Here’s the kicker… I’m a legal citizen, hate taxes, and at the end of each year I file my tax returns to get every dime of it back that I possibly can and pray that I don’t owe more. Now imagine your an illegal, have a fake social… Are you going to file to the government and ask for some of that money back? Nope, you’re scared to death of the government. You just let them have all your taxes.

In the end, many of them pay more taxes than you and I.”

I was aware of this but it is definitely a good point to make. It shows how the small group in power are further exploiting illegal immigrants – it’s no wonder they want to keep them here, pay for their medical expenses and even try to give them licenses to drive without becoming citizens. Not only are they getting cheap labor without having to pay taxes themselves on some occasions (or pay for benefits or bonuses or decent working conditions) but the upper crust is skimming millions of dollars in tax revenues that aren’t being collected by the folks working with fake social security numbers. This doesn’t even include the people who are profiting by selling these fake numbers to exploit both immigrants and citizens for their own selfish monetary gain.

This brings me back to the value of becoming a citizen. The immigrants are so happy to have certain amenities such as a toilet, underpaid work or hot food that they don’t realize they are being taken advantage of. By becoming a citizen, immigrants are empowered because they know the language, the customs and have the right to vote. When they accomplish that, they can finally be free.

I will wrap up this subject for awhile by quoting Theodore Roosevelt:

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American…There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag…We have room but for one language here, and that is the English language…and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that’s loyalty to the American people.”

With all this said, Bush and his good ol’ boys are raking in profits everywhere, have our country in dangerous deficit and continue to wage war in foreign countries while we are in crisis right at home. Mamasaid there’d be days like this…
