Calling all “V”s to Washington!

Posted in General at 8:12 pm by ZoeWashburne

If you’ve seen the movie “V for Vendetta” then you’re well aware of the frightening and timely political message that it has.  If you haven’t seen it, then you need to.  Even a child could understand the plight of a nation under a tyrannical government that uses fear and the removal of individual freedoms to keep its people under its hypnotic spell from this fascinating movie.  While it was billed as a comic book type of a movie, its political message and stylized storytelling has a growing cult following around the world.  The mask that “V” wears in the movie is quickly becoming a symbol for those who hold democracy near and dear to their hearts.

But this isn’t a movie review.  On March 30th the “We The People Foundation” for education, awareness, and knowledge of the Declaration of Independence will be holding a silent vigil in support of the Petition for Redress of Grievances.  While not required for the vigil, it is highly recommended that participants come dressed in the full “V” costume for maximum effect.  If you saw the movie, you know the impact of this silent act of protest…so again, if you didn’t see it…do!

The Petition for Redress addresses the government’s stance on illegal immigration and the impending “North American Union.”  Previous petitions that have been collected by We The People include ones regarding the constitutional violations as related to the Iraq War Resolution, the Patriot Act, the Federal Reserve System, and Income Tax.  All of the petitions will be delivered to the President and all members of Congress on March 15th.  The petition will also accompany a request for an official response from these members of the government to be addressed at Lafayette Park in Washington at 3 p.m. on March 30th.

Can you just imagine the sight of thousands of petitioners dressed in “V” masks and costumes (which sort of looks like a cross between Zorro and The Joker) as members of Congress respond to the demands of the petition?  I’m sure it will be quite the sight, indeed!  The organizers request that all petitioners follow the “silent” vigil rules and will wait for one hour for representatives to arrive and respond to their petitions.  I’m sure we can all guess just how many Congress members will show up, not to mention George W!  I’m guessing he’ll be out of town that day fishing or bike riding or lassoing something.

The full “V” costumes are available for purchase on the We The People website for $55.  The cost is for the entire costume, including mask, gloves, hat, and wig.  The use of the mask and costume of course references the protest in the movie, but according to the site also represents the “means of enjoying anonymity and is an expression of the fear the People are experiencing in publicly resisting government despotism and abuse.”  Plus, it makes a great Halloween costume too!

So, if you’re not doing anything on Friday, March 30th at 3 p.m., live near Washington D.C., and want to exercise your right to protest the actions of your government, then why not give it a whirl?  It will certainly be a sight to see and a memorable way to fight for your rights against the party!

Just a little thing I noticed when comparing numbers and dates just for the hell of it.
“Remember remember the fifth of November”…
November 5th, 2006(11/05/06), Saddam Hussein is sentenced to death with appeal.
    11 X 5
55 days later, he is executed.

Aside from that I wish I could partake in this silent vigil. Alas the destination is far from accessible, but it is very heartening to know such things are happening in the world.
    Spread the word.
