Thanks for writing your story on the bohemia... i did the genealogy research and found my ancestor is from saxony from 1883 and went further to find that the germans gave us the last name boehme as derived from where we were from the bohemia land in the 1500-1600's. I am still trying to figure out exactly what is the true nationality of the bohemia was at the time. some say is the celt... other told me its just german ..yes if the bohemia in saxony interbred with the germans....it is part boehmia and part germany now in saxony. at the end of the article you said " What has happened to the people, the nation and what is the possible connection to the Bohemian grove?" Well i for one know that saxony is the history of the bohemia .... we have thousands upon thousands of bohemia in america and has continue to be lost into another nationality. there are only a few of us left that continue to have some more percentage of the bohemia more than the younger generations. look into the ellis island record or ancestry.com record you will find the last name boehme and boehm is there. ....cant wait to read more of your articles!!

I have an ancestor who immigrated from Bohemia to the US in 1750. He first arrived in North Carolina and then settled in Lancaster County, PA. They left in 1802 for Waterloo County in Ontario, Canada. I read, in a biography that lists our family, that they were part of some kind of Mennonite group that was resistant to war, but were drafted into serving in the transportation unit. They were unarmed soldiers caught in the crossfire of a battle, and all escaped unharmed. When the war ended they headed north into Canada, and I am the first one of my family born back here in the good ol' USA (1964). I, too, knew my ancestors as Czechoslovakian until just several years ago when I came across an old paper referencing the aforementioned biography and began doing some research. I am thankful to those who chose to record, and thus preserve, some of my family's history. I wish that I knew why my ancestors came to the US. I can only assume, based on the time frame and the Mennonite association, that it had something to do with freedom of religious expression.

I have felt the same way, our ancestors were from bohemia also. Doing a family tree has been difficult because I cannot find some of the names on websites.

I agree completely. I too have Bohemian roots on my father's side and would well enjoy finding out more about my heritage. But it seems like everywhere i go i keep comming up with nothing. If anyone know of any good websites or text that could help me out i would be very grateful.. More specifically i would like to find out about the language, as a kid I remember my grandfather saying something like yakimista (i know thats not spelled right) and other phrases. Let me know!

True, our nationality has been usurped to mean everything except "Born or having origins in the province of Bohemia." As a small boy I was corrected in school when I said our family was Bohemian. I was told the "correct" term is "Czechoslovakian". The people correcting me didn't know the difference between Czechs, Moravians, or Slovakians (or Ruthenians who were also a part of the post World War I nation.) I've never been insulted by the terms "Bohunk" or "Hunjak". We seem to take these with the same humor that others delight in offering them to us.

The more one studies and learns about Bohemia's history the more absorbing the subject becomes. For more on the subject look up "The Free Czech Legion". But for them Russia would be totally different; ruled by Marxists answering to Germany.

I am curious about my own ancestral roots which are 'Bohemian'. I am trying to get to the bottom of who the Bohemians really were ??? My great-grandmother and her Bohemian family immigrated to southwestern PA and ended up working in the coal mines and related industries to the production of steel---they were circus performers who somehow found themselves working industrial jobs as part of what is described as an 'epic immigration' to southwestern PA during 1880 --1914. I believe they were Gypsies, especially since my DNA is U3b which is one haplogroup associated with Roma populations. I would be interested in what you can share about this....I believe that a lot of people that described themselves as 'Bohemians' were, in fact, Roma. In my family's case, I think they were 'runaway Gypsies'--not embracing a continued identity with the Roma people. They wanted to assimilate into the U.S. population. What do you think about my theory? Many thanks.

Thank you Mama, for your illuminating profile on the "real" Bohemians. It is always disturbing when groups hijack other groups symbols and beliefs for their own agendas. I'm touched you were inspired by my strange little blog. I too had never heard of this "Bohemian Grove" and am still looking into the facts and/or fictions of this strange story. I will be updating my findings as they reveal themselves to me. Cheers!
