The Greenhouse Effect, Virgin and Gore

I just read about Virgin chairman Sir Richard Branson announcing a prize of 25 million bucks to the first scientist who figures out how to extract greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere. Al Gore, the former VP, was there when this challenge was presented to the world.

Gore said that the planet had a fever and maybe there were ways to get the excess carbon dioxide out of the air that should be explored. Branson felt that everyone had to put their minds to the problem right away to find an answer and we didn’t have the next 60 years to decide. He has offered donations over the next 10 years from his travel businesses (estimated to be about 3 billion dollars) to combat global warming and opened Virgin Fuels to work on 400 million bucks worth of green energy projects over the next three years.

Is this a solution to global warming? First of all, why are former government officials and businessmen the ones announcing this plan? Perhaps because the real government officials are too busy devoting time to their own war time power and profits. Or are programs such as this intended to make the public feel good, that something is being done, without any formal commitment from government officials? It’s speculative, but the bottom line is that critical research does need to be done – for the benefit of the human race, not the earth. Earth will survive us, as it has outlived the dinosaurs, plagues, floods and other disasters. We will simply kill ourselves.

But doesn’t that seem to be the universal mission anyway? Our soldiers are dying in a war our country no longer supports, as are many people in the Middle East. Government officials are more worried about getting fuel to burn rather than what that burning fuel is doing to the environment. It seems to be in their best financial interests to pursue war and continue to use oil. After all, wouldn’t it make a lot more sense to save human lives, seek peace, pursue alternative energy methods and protect our natural resources on earth? But no power play exists on those arenas, so none of the big players want to get out on the field.

The greenhouse effect happens because certain gases in the air, such as carbon dioxide and methane, trap energy from the sun and cause the temperature on earth to rise. I have a greenhouse and the thoughts of this effect are truly scary. When I step out my back door into the greenhouse in a summer day, it is completely oppressive. I am unable to breathe and the heat is stifling. Ultimately, this will happen on a vast scale on earth if global warming is not addressed. Plant life will perish, animals will suffocate and eventually humans will dehydrate or burn. So what is really important – fuel or environment (both actually equate to human lives)? What should be prioritized at this time? Are we so used to the certain ways of life that we can’t change to save ourselves and the world around us? Desensitization – think about where you are at.

No matter who addresses the issue of global warming and what the intentions, it is sure to inspire people to try to help. I have already heard about a couple of UK college students who are starting a website to raise consciousness about global warming and request charitable donations. Every little bit helps and we are all responsible for the world we live in.  MamaSaid there’d be days like this…

    George Bush and the NWO will solve this problem for us as they depopulate the planet by some 4 billion people with war, plagues, famines and “natural” disasters. Then us survivors can use fossil fuels well into the 22nd Century as the scientists discover great big catalytic converters to extract CO2, CO and methane from the air. We are truly blessed.

    I admire the passion. Now do the research, and outside of the box, there’s more to this than mets the eye.

    Government plans for global warming? yes steps are being taken, but not in our interest. Strange like so many other things these days, give out information, but only what you want people to focus on, keep them busy, keep them passionate about something, and they take their focus off of what is really going on.

    Do I have a small part of the answer? yup
    Do I have a direction to point in your research? yup
    Will I? nope
    Truth is not really accepted until an individual stumbles upon it themselves, and until that moment, all truth is dismissed as rubbish if it does not fit into one’s opinions of the way they think things are. Thus any true debate or plan of action can not begin or take effect, until that realization is reached

    This site holds so much promise, more so than many others I have visited. People here seem very passionate, about what they post, I wonder are they truely willing to think outside of the box, or accept the fact that behind the news stories we are being hand fed, their are more frightening truths to discover.

    It’s all a political tool that the Dems are using against the Republicans.
    Both parties are the same. They both S U C K and only care about themselves , their contributors and lobbyists. There is NO ! Yes READ what I said . NO proof of Global warming by any credible scientists or science. If you’re mumbling something right now, you know NOTHING , and you’d buy the Brooklyn Bridge .
    The same people babbling this mantra, are helping corporations to navigate around all of these green mandates and know they have a god given right to tell everyone else what to do without it applying to them .
    Screw the environment and screw all of you that dare to preach this excrement .
    The environment will self regulate and has always self regulated itself longer than we’ve been on earth, and will when we’re long gone.
    I’d go deeper into this, but most of you are ignorant & could never understand the science behind it. Also most web logs have a letter limit .
