The Case to Impeach Bush
I’ve discussed the dictatorship we have under Bush and the incredible loss of democracy we are experiencing as a country under his tyrannical rule. Bush is not working for the people as it is intended – he tells them what’s going down, no matter what anyone says, and that they will like it.
Consider Bush’s televised address to the American people on January 10, 2007. Basically, he let us know that he would “surge” an additional 21,500 troops into Iraq whether anyone liked it or not, saying “I believe it will work”. The November 2006 elections revealed that the American people would not support such a “surge”. Further, Bush and Cheney stated that they would “surge” more troops without obtaining authorization by the United States Congress. This dismal duo invoked the President’s alleged powers as Commander and Chief of the armed forces under Article II.
Article II is meant to guarantee the supremacy of control by civilians of military establishment. Article I, known as the War Powers Clause, states clearly that only both Houses of the United States Congress acting together can declare war. In 1973, in an attempt to prevent another disaster such as Vietnam, Congress enacted the War Powers Resolution, despite President Richard Nixon’s veto. This War Powers Resolution requires Bush to obtain authorization from Congress before going forward with such a “surge” because sending 21,500 troops would substantially enlarge the armed forces already in Iraq without a formal declaration of war.
My interpretation is that Bush continues to operate a dictatorship while claiming to spread the principles of democracy, all for the profit of that good old boys network which remains unfortunately intact. We see what happened in the 1970’s to Nixon – why can’t we impeach Bush? Have we lost that much power as a people? It’s scary to think about. Consider other parallels, such as Bush’s unnecessary wiretapping of Americans in violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which prohibits wiretapping without a warrant. What about the Fourth Amendment that prohibits unlawful searches. Didn’t Article Two of the impeachment of President Nixon reveal Nixon went outside the law when wiretapping? How does Bush get away with this stuff?
Amazing that Bush gets to know everything we say, but we have no idea what he is doing. He gets complete privacy and the final say about all issues and we just have to be quiet and listen. Sorry, you can dress this up as democracy but stripped of the lies, we have the naked truth – dictatorship.
Consider that Bush’s latest target for terror is Iran. He is actively threatening and making preparations to invade Iran. The War Powers Resolution requires Bush to get express authorization from Congress before he launches such a military attack, but will this Resolution hold weight? After all, did the Resolution hold weight when 21,500 troops were just sent to Iraq?
Back in March, 2006, 30 United States House representatives supported creating a Select Committee to look into grounds for recommending Bush’s impeachment. Popular opinion still does not support Bush and his actions. The movement continues and over 14 percent of the House Democrats support the impeachment probe. Further, in a recent Newsweek poll, only 23 percent of the public supported sending a “surge” of troops to Iraq. More than half of Americans feel that Bush is neither honest nor ethical and that he lacks strong leadership qualities. He certainly isn’t honest or ethical – however, he sure has taken over, hasn’t he?
Obviously this “surge” to Iraq is intended to create outrage toward Iran in the longterm to orchestrate a crisis where Bush could declare a state of emergency. Bush would claim this state of emergency in the name of protecting national security interests and to allegedly protect Americans from terrorism.
The terrorism exists right here in our own country and for as long as Bush Jr. remains President, we remain unprotected. Imagine if he is allowed play with his nuclear toys in Iran? Mama Said there’d be days like this…
